PROSERPINE State High School (PSHS) warmly welcomed 20 students from its sister school, Asaka-Nishi High School, in Japan, as part of its student exchange program.

The group of students and two teachers, Tsutomu Kozasa and Keijirou Nakamura, arrived on Saturday, July 22, and left Proserpine for Brisbane, on Tuesday, August 1.

The year 10 and 11 Japanese students were paired up with host families, in Proserpine, and buddies at school.

While not the most ideal weather during their visit, the students were treated to a day out on the water with Ocean Rafting and a visit to the Proserpine Museum, as well as fun activities at PSHS including Indigenous Culture Day and cooking.

Fourteen-year-old Grade Nine student Aisling Barrett was a school buddy for the week.

Asaka-Nishi High School Grade 10 student Aoi Nakamura was paired up with Miss Barrett, the two attended classes together and hung out during break time.

Miss Barrett took Japanese as an elective at the beginning of the year, allowing her to chat with Miss Nakamura in her language.

“I’m pretty good at Japanese, we did speak in English, but I was able to have Japanese conversations with her. I was able to ask her how she was and talk about food and stuff in Japanese,” Miss Barrett said.

“She had to do a report on Australian slang, so I got to teach her some of our slang like ‘G’day mate’ and instead of saying afternoon you say ‘arvo’, and she thought ‘G’day mate’ was pretty funny so she kept saying it.”

Miss Barrett said playing soccer with her school friends and their buddies was very special to her.

“My favourite part was when we were playing HPE (Health and Physical Education) together, my best friend also had a buddy, and my buddy and her buddy were actually very good at soccer – they were scoring goals and doing very good at goalie.

“It was actually very cool because they had really good teamwork skills, so that was actually very special to me to actually play soccer with them.”

Miss Barret hopes to take part in the exchange program again next year and visit Japan.

プロサーパイン州立高校(PSHS)は、学生交流プログラムの一環として、姉妹校である日本の朝霞西高校の生徒20人を温かく迎えました。

生徒と教師22人　教師の小笹勉と中村景二郎のグループは７月２１日土曜日に到着し、８月１日火曜日にプロサーパインを出発してブリスベンに向かった。

10年生と11年生の（※現地の学年で言うと）日本人生徒は、プロサーパインのホストファミリーや学校の仲間とペアを組んでいました。

訪問中は最も理想的な天気ではありませんでしたが、生徒たちはオーシャンラフティングやプロサーパイン博物館への訪問、先住民文化の日や料理などのPSHSでの楽しいアクティビティで水上で一日を過ごしました。

14歳の9年生のアイスリングバレットは、その週の学校の仲間でした。

朝霞西高校10年生（※日本だと高校１年生）の中村碧さんはバレットさんとペアを組み、一緒に授業に出席し、休み時間に交流しました。

ミス・バレットは年の初めに選択科目として日本語を受講し、中村さんと自分の言語でチャットできるようにしました。

「私は日本語がかなり得意で、英語で話しましたが、彼女と日本語の会話をすることができました。私は彼女に彼女の様子を尋ね、食べ物や物事について日本語で話すことができました」とミス・バレットは言いました。

「彼女はオーストラリアのスラングについてレポートをしなければならなかったので、私は彼女に「G'daymate」のような私たちのスラングのいくつかを教えなければなりませんでした。午後と言う代わりに「arvo」と言います、そして彼女は「G'daymate」はかなり面白いと思ったので、彼女はそれを言い続けました。」

ミス・バレットは、学校の友達や彼らの仲間とサッカーをすることは彼女にとって非常に特別だったと言いました。

「私のお気に入りの部分は、私たちが一緒にHPE(健康と体育)をしていたときでした。私の親友にも仲間がいて、私の相棒と彼女の相棒は実際にサッカーがとても上手でした。彼らはゴールを決め、ゴールキーパーでとても上手でした。

「チームワークのスキルがとても良かったので、実際に一緒にサッカーをするのは私にとってとても特別でした。」

ミス・バレットさんは来年も交換留学に参加し、日本を訪問したいと考えています。
